Day 4: Amsterdam, City of Everything That Is Not American

Let me give you a short list of everything shocking/surprising/unusual/hilarious I have witnessed today, in the order that I saw them.

1) a sex shop claiming to belong to a church
2) a (rather large) cake pan in the unfortunate shape of a certain piece of male anatomy displayed in an otherwise normal cookware shop window
3) a very old man smoking a gigantic joint on the public bus
4) a young, stylish woman who clearly does not shave her armpits. At all.
5) probably over 100,000 bikes all stuffed into one bike parking lot (there were more than one of these)
6) an advertisement that consisted solely of a man flipping off the camera (ALL over town)
7) an advertisement of an entirely naked woman
8) "cannabis starter kits" for sale at the flower market
9) our waitress taking a weed break just before serving us our meal
10) an entire square called the "Homomonument" - dedicated to the persecution of homosexuals (pretty cool if you ask me, but certainly not something you'd find in Texas)
11) the tiniest car you've ever seen- smaller than the smart car!

But other than those things, the city is beautiful and vibrant, full of canals and restaurants and young people. The houses are fantastic, and the people are so fun to observe, even the tourists. I was happy to eavesdrop on the French visitors that sat next to us at dinner - they were young and spoke clearly and slowly, so I could even understand them! :)

Today we also went to Utrecht, an adorable town just outside of the city, where we walked around and saw the most adorably fat bulldog lounging like a princess in a bright pink fancy chair. We laughed and laughed, but the local men who sat nearby and clearly owned both the dog and the chair, we're not amused. We also went to the Flower Market -
a truly colorful spectacle, and the Anne Frank House Museum - a fascinating and solemn one. All in all, a successful day.

  1. Berlin has the National Sex and Pornography Museum. And it's legal to buy and sell weed in coffee shops in Holland. But only in coffee shops.

    1. I can tell you from experience that that is not true - I could have bought weed of all varieties and in all form in coffee shops, souvenir shops, flower shops, grocery stores, liquor stores, gas stations, specialized weed stores, weed banks, and the outdoor market. And I could have bought cannabis plants, cannabis seeds, cannabis chocolate, cannabis chews, or the usual smokable cannabis. And that's not even beginning with the paraphernalia.
